The Winsmead Readers meet on the 4th Friday at 10.00, each month at the Constitution Hills branch of Parramatta library. We have one vacancy in our book club. The Library staff in Parramatta supplies the books for us following our suggestions. Our next meeting will be 23 October. The latest book was “Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens”, by Shankari Chandran. It was well received by our members due to the story line and the intricacies of life in Sri Lanka not long after the name change from Ceylon. The story also involved a family who owned an large old house in Sydney which became a place of refuge for many elderly Sri Lankan people. An interesting book! The Winsmead Readers meet on the 4th Friday of the month at the Constitution Hills branch of Parramatta Library at 10am. Our last book Prima Facie was well received. The current book is Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens by Shankari Chandran. It is set in Sri Lanka and Sydney in the past and in the present. Our next meeting is on Friday 27 September. The Winsmead Readers meet on the 4th Friday of the month at the Constitution Hills branch of Parramatta Library at 10am. We have a new book each month supplied by the library. The library in Parramatta gives us a list of the books available with a short description of each one. From this list we choose the books we would like to read. We do not always get the books we have selected. Our latest book is “Prima Facie”, by Susie Miller. It is quite a disturbing book but on a subject which is important. The book is based on an internationally acclaimed play. It demonstrates the injustices and social disadvantages of some sections of our society today. It is set in England but is applicable in many places including Australia. It draws you in and you find it difficult to put down but maybe it is not for everyone…
The Winsmead Book Club meets on the 4th Friday of the month at the Constitution Hill branch of Parramatta City Library. The library organises the books for us following our recommendations. The book we had in June was “The French Braid”, by Anne Tyler. It was a very easy read but our members only gave it 2 points out of 10. It was not really a story but a record of a family and their lives over several generations.
Our current book is completely different. It is Tim Winton’s latest book, “Juice”. It is a huge book (513 pages) which will be quite a difficult read, I think, but I hope it is interesting. I have only read a little of it but I already have 5 words that I am not sure of their meaning. Tim Winton definitely has a way with words. He tells a great story.
